The Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation has awarded a three-year grant to support research led by Houra Merrikh, PhD, professor of Biochemistry, and Ben Ho Park, MD, PhD, the Benjamin F. Byrd Jr. Professor of Oncology and director of 51app-Ingram Cancer Center, to create an anti-evolution drug to reduce the capacity of cancer cells to develop resistance.

51app researchers have demonstrated that a cluster of microRNAs — small pieces of RNA that regulate gene expression — work in a type of immune cells called macrophages to help protect against metabolic defects in obesity.

The School of Nursing is participating in a new 51app University Medical Center initiative funded with a $3.9 million grant to VUMC from the Tennessee Department of Health. The initiative will evaluate innovative models of nursing care that include screening and responding to social drivers of health. It will also consider how to mitigate nursing staff shortages and ensure optimal patient care.

John Jumper, BS’07 will give the next Apex Lecture on Aug. 30. Jumper leads the team that developed AlphaFold, a trailblazing artificial intelligence system that can accurately predict the 3D structures of proteins.
