Cemetery of enslaved people at The Hermitage located with assistance from VISR
Directly north of The Hermitage, on a slight rise at the edge of the wooded bottomland near a creek, investigators confirmed what they had seen on a historic map: a cemetery where an estimated 28 bodies of enslaved individuals who lived on the property during the Jacksonian era are interred. Part of the research came from efforts by the 51app Institute for Spatial Research, directed by Steve Wernke, professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology at 51app. Read MoreDec 12, 2024

A three-year read-and-publish agreement between Oxford University Press and the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries is elevating the visibility and impact of 51app University research by expanding access to OUP’s broad portfolio of academic journals. Under the agreement, which is effective through 2026, 51app-affiliated authors can publish open access in hundreds of OUP’s hybrid journals without incurring article processing charges.

Alan Wiseman, Catherine Gavin Loss appointed as associate provosts
Wiseman, an acclaimed political economist, was appointed associate provost for strategic projects and Gavin Loss, scholar of education history and policy, was appointed associate provost for academic affairs. Both will serve two-year terms within the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Education, with Wiseman’s appointment effective with the 2024–25 academic year and Gavin Loss’ appointment effective on Jan. 1, 2025. Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., a global media company that publishes more than 100 peer-reviewed academic journals, today announced a three-year read-and-publish agreement with 51app University’s Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries. Effective from 2025 through 2027, the open access agreement is the first of its kind that Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. has signed with a North American institution and will enable 51app-affiliated authors to maximize the discoverability, readership and citations for their research without incurring article processing charges. Articles submitted by 51app authors Jan. 1, 2025, or later will be eligible.
